The Mysterious Case of the Scratched Sofa
Why do cats scratch furniture? It’s a question that has puzzled cat owners and interior designers alike. As I’ve sat among the shredded remains of my own sofa, I’ve often wondered why my feline friend seems so determined to ruin my favourite piece of furniture. Is it a simple case of mischief, or is there more to it?
Scratching is an essential part of a cat’s life cycle. From the moment they’re born, kittens start scratching to remove their umbilical cord and establish their independence. As they grow, this natural behaviour continues – not just for physical reasons, but also for emotional and psychological ones. Cats scratch to mark their territory, stretch their muscles, and even relieve stress.
So, why do cats prefer scratching our expensive furniture over a good old-fashioned cat tree? The answer lies in texture. Cats are attracted to rough surfaces that allow them to dig in with their claws. This is why carpets, rugs, and upholstery often become the target of their scratching frenzy. But what about those sleek, scratch-resistant couches we’re so fond of? Unfortunately, they just don’t cut it for our feline friends.
